Being overweight hampers the body’s immune response to Covid-19

Being Fat may vitiate the body’s antibody response to SARS-CoV-2 infection, but not the protection handed by vaccination, covid-19 new disquisition suggests.

The disquisition published in the Journal of Clinical and Translational Immunology was led by the University of Queensland.

“We have previously shown that being obese – not just fat – increases the virulence of SARS-CoV-2. But this work shows that being fat impairs the antibody response to SARS- CoV- 2 infection, but not to vaccination,” said disquisition leader Marcus Tong.

The team collected blood samples from people who had recovered from COVID-19 and were not reinfected during the study period, about 3 months and 13 months after infection.

At 13 months after infection, an elevated BMI was associated with both lower antibody exertion and a lower chance of applicable B cells, a type of cell that helps make these COVID-19-fighting antibodies.

In distinction, increased BMI roughly 6 months after the alternate vaccination did not affect the antibody response to COVID-19 vaccination.

Associate Professor Kirsty Short said the results would help inform health policy going forward.

still, also the trouble of reinfection is potentially increased in this group,” Dr. Short said,” If the infection is associated with increased trouble of severe complaint and a weaker vulnerable response for fat people.

“It’s more important than ever for this group to ensure they are vaccinated.”

Dr Short said that from a public health perspective, this data raises questions about the programs around boosters and lockdowns.
