Broadband Network To 10Gbps Is To Upgrade Back-End Network Till 2026

Minister for Communications and Information Josephine Teo announced on Feb 21 that the upgrade is being made in preparation for data-intensive tools such as artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality, and smart home applications, which will require faster speeds. The Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) is investing $100 million to upgrade the back-end network and user equipment by 2026, enabling residential broadband Network to provide connection speeds of up to 10Gbps.

The enhancement represents the next phase of the Singapore Nationwide Broadband Network, which was introduced commercially in 2010 with a $1 billion investment from the Singapore government. The network, which already can handle speeds of 10Gbps, achieved coverage of over 95 percent in 2013, a global first.

The announcement to invest $100 million comes after Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wrong announced plans to upgrade the National Broadband Network when he delivered Singapore’s FY2024 Budget Statement on Feb 16.

The anticipated arrival of faster speeds is expected to benefit over 500,000 households in this area. These households are projected to subscribe through telecommunications companies to access these faster services by 2028. The broadband Network plans available offer surfing speeds of at least 1Gbps for these households. However, the actual speeds experienced by each home may vary based on factors such as the number of users in the area and potential throttling by Internet service providers to prevent network congestion caused by a small group of users.
