National Cookie Day Celebrate on 4, December 2023

National Cookie Day on December 4 offers a sweet treat. Bakers across the country heat the oven for holiday baking, and we enjoy giving boxes of cookies to friends and family throughout the season.

The English word “cookie” is derived from the Dutch word cookie, meaning “small cake.”

Baked hard wafers resembling cookies have existed since the beginning of recorded baking history. Not surprisingly, he was also well-traveled. However, they were generally not sweet enough to be considered cookies by modern standards.

Cookies appear to have originated in Persia in the 7th century when the use of sugar became common in the region. They also spread to Europe through the Muslim subjugation of Spain. By the 14th century, cookies were common at all levels of society, from royal kitchens to street vendors.

Cookies arrived in America in the 17th century. Macaroons and gingerbread cookies were popular early American cookies.

In North America, and many English-speaking countries, the most common word for a cookie is “biscuit”. In some areas, both the terms cookies and biscuits are used.

In 1976, Sesame Street first included National Cookie Day on its schedule on November 26. Cookie Monster even proclaimed his own National Cookie Day in the 1980 book The Sesame Street Dictionary.

Also in 1987, Matt Nader of San Francisco’s Blue-Chip Cookie Company created Cookie Day, celebrating it on December 4.

With global travel becoming widespread at the time, cookies became a natural travel snack, becoming a modern counterpart to the travel cakes eaten throughout history.

One of the most popular early cookies, which caught on particularly well and became known by the same name on every continent, was the Jumble, a relatively hard cookie made largely of nuts, sweetener, and water.
