The Guardian deleted The “Letter to America” Written By Osama Bin Laden

On Wednesday, the Guardian made the unusual move to delete a 21-year-old letter written by Osama bin Laden from their site. Several TikTokers have encouraged their followers to read the letter written by the leader of al Qaeda, causing the document titled “Letter to America” to become viral on various social media platforms. Readers of The Guardian are currently greeted with a message stating that the page previously displayed a translated version of Osama Bin Laden’s “Letter to America”, as reported in the Observer on Sunday, November 24, 2002. The document, which was published on the same day, was removed on 15 November 2023”.

Among the takeaways people are discussing on TikTok: is bin Laden’s statement that September 11, 2001, happened because America supported Israel.”They deployed a large number of soldiers to confront us and allied with the Israelis, resulting in the oppression and occupation of our land. This provoked our response on the eleventh.” The TikTok trend appears to have originated from a video shared by Lynnette Adkins, who urged her nearly 12 million followers to pause their current activities and read “Letter to America”, I feel like I’m going through an existential crisis right now”.

Bin Laden’s renewed anti-Israel message coincides with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s denial of allegations that the country is engaged in war crimes in Gaza. The latest conflict in the Middle East ignited on Oct.7 following Hamas’ terrorist attack on Israeli civilians that left more than 1,400 dead.
