Greta Gerwig’s film “Barbie” dominated the Golden Globe Awards nominations by winning nine awards, including Best Picture Musical or Comedy. The movie also received acting nominations for Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, as well as nominations for its three original songs. The film was followed by Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” which received eight nominations, including Best Picture Drama, and stars Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., and Emily Blunt.

A new, profit-based group announced the Golden Globe Awards nominations on Monday. The group has a larger and more diverse voting body and aims to bring transparency to the awards process. Cedric the Entertainer and Wilmer Valderrama presided over the announcements from the Beverly Hilton Hotel, where the show will take place on January 7.

The films nominated for Best Motion Picture Drama include “Oppenheimer,” Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro,” Celine Song’s “Past Lives,” Justin Trite’s “Anatomy of a Fall” and Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone Of Interest”. In the Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy category, “Barbie” was nominated along with “Air,” “American Fiction,” “The Holdovers,” “May in December” and “Poor Things.”

“Poor Things” and “Killers of the Flower Moon” received seven nominations each. “Poor Things” received nominations for its screenplay by Yorgos Lanthimos, and its actors Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe, and Tony McNamara. “Killers of the Flower Moon” received nominations for directing and co-writing the screenplay with Eric Roth by Martin Scorsese and stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone, and Robert De Niro.

Stone, who was also nominated for the Showtime series “The Curse,” expressed her gratitude for the nominations. She also said that her “Poor Things” character Bella Baxter is her favorite and that she is “so grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this magical film experience.”

The Golden Globe Awards had long been among the highest-profile awards season broadcasts, second only to the Oscars. However, the group has been embroiled in controversy in recent years after a Times report exposed ethical lapses by its members, including accepting lavish gifts and travel from awards promoters and studios. But the new, more diverse group aims to bring transparency and fairness to the awards process.

The 81st Golden Globe Awards will be the first major telecast of the awards season, with a new home on CBS. Before the pandemic, it was still attracting about 19 million viewers. The show honors only the flashiest filmmaking categories – picture, director, actor – which mean no long speeches from visual effects supervisors or directors of shorts no one has heard of.
